When asked, “Where would you like to go next on your voyage?” I stumble. Because no matter where I travel, or how incredible the view is, it’s the people who make it what it is: our interaction, the laughs, the deep conversations, the admissions of deep desire, the sharing of food and drink, the expression of extraordinary talent as well as silly, useless skills. In my travels, I’ve seen, magnificent works of art, modern buildings of steel and ancient ruins of stone. I’ve walked the desserts, climbed mountains and glided across oceans. It is always the people, not the places I remember most. I’d like to say it is because they impress me so, because they do. But it is far more selfish than that, for in my ability to experience their magnificence and identify it as such, a bit of light is shined upon my own.
In planning my next adventure, I follow my heart’s desire. Trusting that the WHY I’m going rather than the WHERE I’m going will call unto me the people with whom I will share the most magnificent experience, I listen deeply and allow the desires of my heart to unfold: tango dancing in Argentina, songwriting in Nashville, woodworking in Sweden…I simply listen.
